I have just a minor obsession with coconut oil. Just a small one. And by small I mean I use it for everything! It’s a little like the dad from “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” and his love for Windex. Except my obsession is organic, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and you can eat it.
I keep 2 bottles of coconut oil at home at all times. I have 1 in the bathroom. It’s a fantastic moisturizer and hair conditioner. And yes, I do use it on my face and no, it does not make it really oily. It absorbs nicely and is great for acne. Since it’s anti-bacterial it works great on dry, cut hands. It can also help reduce the itch of mostquito bites, and can help fight wrinkles. I’ll rub a small amount between my hands and rub in through wet hair and in the morning I have some nice curls! Better curls than I have gotten from any ‘traditional’ hair product. It might also help stimulate hair growth! Why would you use anything else on your skin and hair?
I also keep one in the kitchen. Saturated fats are really bad for you, right? Not the kind found in coconut oil. Animal fats have a saturated fat that is a long-chain triglyceride. Saturdated fat in coconut oil is a medium-chain triglyceride. This means it can actually help your body, and breaking down these fats in the liver leads to efficient burning energy. It helps promote weight loss, may help with hypothroidism, and may help improve Alzheimer’s, and may help with blood sugar regulation. It’s easy to cook with, and doesn’t have a coconut taste. It has a high smoke point, so it’s a great dairy-free replacement for butter and makes a delicious stir fry. I have even heard of people putting it in their coffee.
There are so many other uses! It’s hard to keep this article to a decent reading length, and not turn it into a book. If you haven’t tried it, I urge you to try it for something! And then once you love it half as much as I do a little research will give you a hundred other uses. Now it’s time to go put some on my hands…they are looking a little dry!
