Roses, hat and a mint julep

Down and Derby

Can’t make it to Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby this Saturday? That’s okay — with our tips for throwing a winning Kentucky Derby party at home, you’ll be running for the roses anyway!

Since roses are the official flower of the Derby, they’re perfect for decorating everything from yourself to your table. Pick up a few bouquets* from the 3 for $15 Grower’s Bunches rack (in the Heinen’s Floral Department) and get to work.

Plenty beautiful on their own, roses don’t need much enhancement. Arrange them in a mason jar or even an old trophy cup to add a touch of southern authenticity to your table.

Round out your arrangement with greenery and white flowers for texture, height and contrast. Bonus if you have horse-themed décor or horseshoes in the mix!

It’s just not Derby Day without a big, bold hat to top off your outfit. Pick up a basic wide-brimmed hat and add some flair with ribbons and flowers. We added fresh roses to ours by stringing jewelry wire through the stem and then the hat. Trim the stems afterward or tuck them under a ribbon to hide from view.

Feed your guests southern-inspired Peach Whiskey Barbecue Chicken and then complete the theme by tipping back a refreshing mint julep crafted with fresh mint from the Produce Department at your Heinen’s. Not sure how to make one? We’ve got you covered with the perfect recipe for the classic Derby drink. Now you’re ready for the “most exciting two minutes in sports!”

  1. After seeing your promo for Derby Day, I visited the Heinen’s in Lake Bluff for roses. The ‘flower lady’ knew nothing about the roses, and didn’t think she would be getting any. It was a great idea, at a great price. Any idea if that store will be participating ? I’ll definitely return to get some. Please advise.
    Thanks.

    1. Good Morning Kathleen – We’re sorry to hear you weren’t able to locate roses at our Lake Bluff store and have reached out with our Floral Lead to check if they will be getting any in prior to this Saturday, May 6. To clarify, the 3/$15 floral section is an every day deal, though availability and varieties do vary by store. We will follow up with you as soon as we know more!

    2. Hello, again, Kathleen – Our Floral Lead at the Lake Bluff Heinen’s confirmed that they do have 6-stem roses for $5 in the 3/$15 section of the Floral Department. We chose to add a another bunch of flowers from that same section to make a fuller arrangement. Enjoy!
