February: Heart Health Month

Heart health is a pulsing topic in America today. Why? Could it be because heart disease is the leading cause of death in both men and women? You bet.

There is a lot of discussion on heart disease because it is so preventable, yet it is plaguing our nation. There are many things you can control to make sure you are on the right track to avoiding heart disease.

Maintain A Healthy Diet
This is important! A healthy diet means a different approach for everyone, but I think we can all agree on a few things:

  1. Cutting back on red meat, processed foods and sugar is a great start.
  2. We need plenty of plant food sources including vegetables, fruits, legumes and whole grains.
  3. Sustainable, clean fish is another smart choice. Research shows Omega-3 fatty acids have reduced abnormal heart beats and triglyceride levels, which slightly lowers blood pressure and slows the growth rate of atherosclerotic plaque. (Heart.org)

How Can Heinen’s Help?
Verlasso Salmon is a great source of Omega-3s. We carefully source our Verlasso Salmon which comes from Patagonia, Chile. They are humanely raised and harvested and a great source of Omega-3s because of the oil from their wild-caught feeder fish, which include herring, anchovies and mackerel. Verlasso Salmon’s diet also contains a natural algae, the source from which feeder fish receive their Omega-3s. Their diet reduces dependence on feeder fish and is great for our aqua environment.

Verlasso Salmon tastes amazing, so it’s a win-win for your heart and your taste buds! Stop by the Heinen’s Seafood Case and ask our experts for cooking tips, or visit our blog to learn more about Heinen’s salmon and try new recipes.

Don’t like fish? No problem. Adding a fish oil supplement to your daily routine will ensure you are getting enough Omega-3s for your heart. New Chapter Wholemega comes from 100% Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil and contains the entire spectrum of Omega fatty acids your body needs. It’s also fresh pressed from non-genetically modified salmon. Taking Wholemega every day for one week, you are consuming the equivalent of three servings of Wild Alaskan Salmon. What makes Wholemega great is that this fish oil does not taste or smell like fish!
