Chart of Allergens in Halloween Candy

Avoiding Halloween Candy Food Allergens

Living with food allergies can make Halloween much scarier than it needs to be. With so many different varieties of candy being passed out on Halloween, it’s often difficult to know which varieties contain or may have come in contact with common allergens and which don’t.

During Halloween, one way to avoid food allergens while trick-or-treating is to look for homes that display a teal colored painted pumpkin. The teal pumpkin signifies that allergy free, often non-food, “treats” are available there for those that deal with food allergies. The Teal Pumpkin Project is a campaign started by Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) in 2014 allowing all children the opportunity to participate in Halloween.

Looking for some ideas for allergy friendly “treats” to hand out on Halloween, here’s a few to get you started:

  • Stickers
  • Bubbles
  • Pencils
  • Erasers
  • Bouncy Balls

For those that live with or know someone living with food allergies, the chart below might be helpful in avoiding popular candy varieties that may contain common allergens.
