#HeinensHolidayDecor: Outdoor Vases & Urns

Decking your home with greenery, baubles and floral fun for the holidays: a six-part series teaching simple design techniques using grocery store finds.

It’s the time of year to get in the holiday spirit and start decorating. Your outdoor planters are a perfect place to start and are calling for a little touch of winter fancy. Whether they live on your front stoop, on the back patio or near the side door, these planters can be beautiful during the holiday season with a few simple steps.

Empty VaseStep 1: First make sure you clean out the dead leaves and old non-pleasing dirt from your summer/fall plants. Starting with a fresh base always adds to the magic of the new arrangement. Empty Urn

Step 2: Collect a variety of greens from your local grocery store or even head to the woods for a few evergreen clippings. Pops of color including winterberries, decorative sticks and painted pinecones can also help in bringing your outdoor décor to life.

Step 3: It is always nice to start to fill each planter with your greenery first. Place some of the greenery boughs horizontal out from the center of the planter while inserting other branches into the vase vertically to give the arrangement height. Remember to wear your gloves as the greenery branches tend to be covered in sap and brrrr…it’s kind of cold outside!

Step 4: Add pops of color and visual interest by filling in some of the holes with red decorative berries and snow-flocked pinecones. Voila, you have winter planters perfect for any area outside your home.

Step 5: Looking for something to make your planters extra bright? You can now find battery-operated, white twinkle lights that operate on a timer (6 hrs on, 18 hours off) perfect for any outdoor arrangement or side door welcome.

Remember these outdoor holiday décor planter arrangements should be easy and fun. Don’t overthink them; go with what feels natural and festive. Add a small dusting of Mother Nature’s winter snow and your outdoor planters are sure to sparkle all winter long. Happy winter planters everyone. Enjoy!
