One of the best parts about building burgers is that everyone can create a personal burger masterpiece when piling on the condiments and toppings. Lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion, ketchup and mustard are classics that will always be popular among burger lovers, but for those looking to take their burger over-the-top, we have a few inventive topping recipes that will do just that!

Bacon Jam

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 lb. Heinen’s Uncured Bacon
  • 1/2 lb. D’artagnan Duck Bacon
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup brewed coffee (hot or cold)
  • 1/4 cup Heinen’s Pure Maple Syrup
  • 1 tbsp. Heinen’s Balsamic Vinegar
  • 1 tbsp. Heinen’s Stone Ground Mustard

Method:

  1. Roughly chop the bacon and cook it in a heavy pot; transfer to a bowl using a slotted spoon, draining off most of the drippings. Sauté the onion and garlic in remaining drippings for 5 minutes or until soft and starting to turn golden.
  2. Return the bacon to the pan, add the brown sugar, coffee, maple syrup, vinegar and mustard and cook over medium heat for half an hour, or until deep golden and thickened to the consistency of jam. If you like, cool and pulse in the food processor for a finer texture. Serve warm or cold.

Pickled Red Onions

Ingredients:

  • 2 medium red onions, sliced about 1/8 inch thick
  • 2-3 paper thin slices of lime, halved or quartered
  • 1 cup white wine vinegar
  • 2 tbps. sugar
  • 1 tsp. kosher salt
  • 1 tsp. peppercorns
  • 1 tsp. whole coriander
  • 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lime juice
  • about 1/2 cup water

Method:

  1. Place a medium-size colander in the sink.
  2. In a medium-size microwave safe bowl, heat 4 cups of water to boiling, about 5-6 minutes. Carefully add onions to the hot water. Use a large spoon to make sure onions are submerged. After 15 seconds, pour onion into the colander to drain. Transfer onion and lime slices to a jar (or jars) that will contain the onions (about a 3 cups capacity). You want the onions to fill the jar to the brim, but not be super tightly packed.
  3. Combine vinegar, sugar, salt, peppercorns and coriander seeds in the previously used bowl. Stir and cook on high for three minutes. Remove from microwave, add fresh lime juice and stir to make sure all of the sugar and salt is dissolved.
  4. Pour hot solution over the onions. Add enough water to bring liquid level to the top of the jar. Watch the beautiful color transformation take place; it’s amazing!! Cover the jar(s) and allow to cool for 30 minutes then refrigerate. They can be eaten right away, but the ingredients will meld and the flavor will be even better if allowed to sit for 2-3 hours. Onions will keep well in the refrigerator for 5-7 days.

Kicked-Up Ketchups

Indian Spiced

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon Heinen’s Canola Oil
  • 1/4 cup onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup Heinen’s Organic Ketchup
  • 1/2 tsp. curry powder

In a small pan, heat canola oil over a medium flame. Add onion and sauté until browned. Add onions, ketchup, and curry powder to food processor and pulse until combined.

Bloody Mary

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup Heinen’s Organic Ketchup
  • 1 tsp. Heinen’s Sriracha Sauce
  • 1 tsp. prepared horseradish
  • 1/2 tsp. celery salt

Combine all ingredients in a food processor, and pulse until blended.

Secret Sauce

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup Heinen’s Organic Ketchup
  • 1/3 cup Heinen’s Dijon Mustard
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 3 cornichons, minced

In a medium bowl, fold ketchup, brown mustard, and mayonnaise together using a rubber spatula. Add in cornichons and mix until evenly distributed.

Chipotle Lime

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup Heinen’s Organic Ketchup
  • 7 oz. can chipotles in adobo, drained
  • 1/2 tsp. lime juice

Blend ingredients in a food processor or blender.

Sweet & Sour

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup Heinen’s Organic Ketchup
  • 1/4 cup Heinen’s Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar

Pour all of the ingredients into a medium bowl, and whisk until thoroughly combined.

Cherry Pepper

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup Heinen’s Organic Ketchup
  • 1/2 cup pitted halved cherries
  • 1/4 tsp. freshly cracked black pepper

Pour all of the ingredients into a food processor and pulse until smooth.

Mayo Mix-Ins

Roasted Red Pepper Mayo

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup mayo
  • 2 tbsp. roasted red pepper
  • 1-1/2 tsp. fresh parsley
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Mix all of the ingredients into a medium bowl, and whisk until thoroughly combined.

Wasabi Mayo

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup mayo
  • 1/2 tsp. wasabi mixed with 1/2 tsp. water
  • 1/2 tsp. lemon juice
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Mix all of the ingredients into a medium bowl, and whisk until thoroughly combined.

Garlic Lemon-Pepper Mayo

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup mayo
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1/4 tsp. lemon juice
  • Fresh cracked black pepper, to taste
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Mix all of the ingredients into a medium bowl, and whisk until thoroughly combined.

Pesto Mayo

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup mayo
  • 1-1/2 tsp. Heinen’s Pesto
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Mix all of the ingredients into a medium bowl, and whisk until thoroughly combined.

Sriracha Mayo

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup mayo
  • 2 tsp. Heinen’s Sriracha Sauce
  • 1 tsp. lime juice
  • 1/8 tsp. soy sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Mix all of the ingredients into a medium bowl, and whisk until thoroughly combined.

Jalapeno Mayo

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup mayo
  • 1 small jalapeno, seeded
  • 1/2 tsp. lime juice
  • 1/4 tsp. garlic, minced
  • Pinch dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Mix all of the ingredients into a medium bowl, and whisk until thoroughly combined.

Spice Horseradish-Parmesan Mayo

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup mayo
  • 1/2 oz. Heinen’s Parmigiano-Reggiano, grated
  • 3 tbsp. prepared horseradish
  • 1/4 tsp. cayenne
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Mix all of the ingredients into a medium bowl, and whisk until thoroughly combined.
