The Healthy Appetite Program: Take a Shortcut to Healthier Living!
Healthy Appetite is a unique initiative developed by the nutrition and health experts at the Cleveland Clinic and the chefs of Heinen’s. Based upon nutrition and health information you can trust, the program provides the resources you need to make healthier food and lifestyle choices. Think of it as the more you know, the more you can eat approach
Here’s why we care:
- An estimated 33 percent of cancers could be prevented by healthy lifestyle changes, including a diet rich in plant-based foods.
- Substituting unsaturated fats in place of foods rich in saturated and trans fats has the potential to reduce cholesterol up to 10 percent, which further lowers the risk of developing heart disease by 20 percent.
- A modest weight loss of 5-7 percent, resulting from small lifestyle changes such as lowering dietary fat, can reduce a person’s risk of developing diabetes by nearly 60 percent.
- Diets high in fiber from fruits, vegetables, cereals and whole grains are associated with lower rates of obesity, heart disease, some cancers and Metabolic Syndrome (a condition that increases the likelihood that a patient will develop heart disease and diabetes). Every 10-gram increase in dietary fiber may reduce the risk of heart disease by 27 percent.
Your good health is our combined mission, so we’ll make these changes easy and accessible. Through our Healthy Appetite program, you’ll find a smorgasbord of offerings including recipes on this website, hands-on cooking classes, freshly-made Healthy Appetite selections in Heinen’s prepared food cases, and educational kiosks in our stores stocked with helpful hints and recipes on healthy eating and living, including:

Research shows breakfast eaters tend to be thinner than those who abstain. Plus, breakfast boosts metabolism and fuels the brain for the mental demands of the day. Include a variety of seasonal, locally grown produce to make the meal nutritionally complete—it’s summertime!
- Top whole grain cereal with freshly sliced strawberries.
- Toss blueberries into a low-fat smoothie.
- Serve sliced melon over low fat cottage cheese.
- Top sliced peaches with vanilla yogurt
