You’ve never tasted lamb this good! Lava Lake Lamb is 100% grass-fed, free-range lamb, and it’s only available July through September. Lava Lake lambs range freely over long distances and are raised by seasoned shepherds in the same way they have been for centuries. Their diet or wild grasses and herbs results in lean, fit and healthy lambs. You’ll only find Lava Lake Lamb at Heinen’s.
Located outside Sun Valley, Idaho, Lava Lake Lamb is bordered by Craters of the Moon National Monument, where black lava flows created by volcanic eruptions thousands of years ago gave this ranch its name. The beautiful, mountainous region is isolated, and you could go for miles without seeing a road.
The sheep are born between January and February, and as snow melts and the wildflowers and grasses pop up, they are herded up the mountains. The sheep travel more than one hundred miles as they make their way from the lava flows up the mountainside.
This isolation and wide-open spaces allows the sheep to be raised using centuries-old practices. Peruvian shepherds live in covered wagons and are responsible for caring for “bands” of about 1,000 mother ewes and their lambs. These herders, most of who have been working with sheep in the mountains for 10-20 years, spend the summer months living in traditional sheep wagons. Border collies also accompany each band, sounding the alarm on predators and moving the sheep over the rugged terrain. Great Pyrenees guard dogs round out the group to repel predators.
Lava Lake Lamb is usually served in high-end restaurants, but Heinen’s is the first – and only – grocery store in the area to offer this delicious, tender meat. Our selection of Lava Lake Lamb is hand-selected for us in the field, and we keep in regular contact with the ranch.
Lava Lake Lamb is grass-fed and grass-finished, while most lamb is traditionally grain-finished. Research shows that grass-fed meat is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamin E and Beta-Carotene, and is lower in fat than grain-fed meat. Lava Lake Lamb is also free of added hormones, antibiotics, herbicides and insecticides.
