Plant Powered FAQ

Why did we move some of the meat alternative products to the meat department?

Plant based product offerings are exploding with new brands and innovations every month. To accommodate this growth and ensure we have the best selection, we needed more space. The size of our Deli department was constraining our ability to grow the category; in many stores, we couldn’t offer the full complement of current products. By integrating throughout the store, we can grow more effectively.

What are plant based products made from?

Plant based products are made from a wide variety of ingredients. Common ingredients include soy, nuts, grains and legumes. We know some customers have allergies or sensitivities to certain foods and may need more information about the specific ingredients in certain products, so we have this information readily available for those who request it.

Where are the plant based items in the store?

We offer plant based products in almost every department of our store. Our new plant based shopping guide is available in the Wellness department and on our website.

What’s the difference between plant based and vegan diets?

Following a vegan diet requires abstaining from eating any animal products, while a plant based diet emphasizes eating fruits and vegetables, whole grains and minimizing the intake of animal products. Our goal in introducing plant based products and providing education is to support all of our customers in their wellness journeys. We strive to continually evolve to meet the needs of our customers without being too prescriptive about any one approach. For customers who choose to follow an all vegan diet,  we have products and educational tools for them too.

Are all of Heinen's plant based products vegan?

Our goal is to provide a wide selection of products that meet the dietary and lifestyle needs of as many of our customers as possible. Our approach to plant based foods focuses on offering products primarily derived from plants, including vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, legumes and fruits. While all of these products are vegetarian, we do carry some plant based products that contain small amounts of cheese or other animal-derived ingredients, so please be aware that not all of these products are considered vegan.

We understand some customers choose to completely eliminate animal products from their diets or may have allergies or sensitivities to certain foods which requires them to seek additional information about the specific ingredients in our products, so we have this information readily available for those who request it. We also offer a Vegan Shopping Guide, which is available in our Wellness Departments (and online here) to help customers find vegan options throughout our store.
