Spruce Up Your Window Planter Boxes

Holiday Planter Decoration
December 4, 2017

Decking your home with greenery, baubles and floral fun for the holidays: a six-part series teaching simple design techniques using grocery store finds.

In the warm weather months there is something so special about filling those window planter boxes with creeping vines and bold, scented geraniums. With the colder months upon us, why not take a new approach to your window boxes and give them a bit of a holiday makeover just in time for the first snow.

Step 1: Start by pulling out all of your withered summer plants. Your new arrangements will look their best with a fresh slate.

Step 2: Shop for a few combinations of greenery, with different textures and various shades of green. Add shatterproof ornaments, pinecones and festive painted sticks to give your planter box arrangements height and visual interest. Using these colored sticks can add drama to any outdoor planter box with minimal cost and not a ton of design time necessary.

Step 3: Wear your gloves as you start to layer in the greenery first, making a solid base of evergreen boughs for each planter box, add in the sticks, ornaments and pinecones to give your designs just a touch of sparkle and festive fun. Think of these elements as accessories to any holiday party outfit… add on all of the drama and sparkle and then step back to give the design a once over, removing anything that is just too over the top. Sometimes it’s those planter boxes filled with simple pinecones and spruce boughs that are the best.

Don’t Forget: Remember safety and work with a friend if you are designing planter boxes that are above your ground floor. Be careful and plan to work during the daylight hours, making this a more fun and simple design project for everyone.
