We Know Our Sources: Singletons & Co.

The following story was written by Heinen’s partner Elaine T. Cicora.

With values of family ownership, tradition of quality and an unshakeable commitment to the community, it’s no wonder Singletons & Co., an award-winning British cheesemaker and monger, was the natural choice for an exclusive new partnership with Heinen’s.

Established in the rolling hills of Lancashire, England, Singletons & Co. has been selling its handcrafted traditional cheeses since 1934; in fact, some of its original techniques and recipes are still in use today. But its history stretches back much farther: to 1745, to be exact, when the Singleton family began dairy farming in this rugged corner of northwest England. Today, Singletons & Co. continues to handcraft all its cheeses at Mill Farm dairy, in the same village where its artisans have been making cheeses for more than 80 years.

Don’t let the humble history mislead you. Singletons & Co. has made an international name for itself in recent years, exporting its cheeses to more than 30 countries. In the process, the company has built an impressive catalog of products, stretching from its own traditional Lancashire recipes and British territorial classics to innovative and exciting blended cheeses. Its broad offerings are augmented with products from other top-notch producers from across England and Ireland, which Singletons & Co. is proud to represent in its portfolio.

As a result, it’s no surprise to learn the “& Co.” in the name refers not to “company,” but to “community.” “We are only as strong as the people that comprise our constituent parts,” staffers will tell you. That includes the long-tenured production staff, the cooperative of small dairy farmers who provide the milk, the other like-minded British and Irish cheesemakers with whom the company collaborates and loyal customers across the globe.

Today, you can become part of that discerning group. You’ll find the following exclusive offerings in Heinen’s Specialty Cheese Departments:

  • Singletons & Co. Sage Derby: A traditional young English cheddar hand-blended with coarsely chopped sage, for a beautiful green-marbled appearance.
  • Singletons & Co. Port Wine Cheddar: A traditional creamy English cheddar laced with rich, sweet port, resulting in an unctuous flavor and a marvelous red tint perfect for holiday cheeseboards.
  • Singletons & Co. Trufflewood: Earthy and indulgent, this voluptuous cheddar is infused with black truffles and porcini mushrooms. It is sure to be the star of your next cheese tray.
  • Singletons & Co. Oak-Smoked Parlick: An award-winning ewe’s milk cheese named for Lancashire’s Parlick Fell. This fresh-flavored cheese is naturally cold-smoked over oak and applewood chips by master smoker Paul Nelson.

Try them all and when you do, don’t forget to say, “Cheese!”
