Heinen’s Launches Where Food Comes From CARE Certified Program

A third-party verification achievement for Heinen’s beef, pork and chicken in partnership with Where Food Comes From, Inc.

CLEVELAND [Mar. 23, 2021] – For more than 92 years, Heinen’s has upheld values of trust, transparency and integrity. Today, they’re taking their commitment one step further by verifying that Heinen’s branded beef, pork and Gerber’s chicken are raised and harvested with care.

Heinen’s longtime partner, Where Food Comes From, Inc., the most trusted resource for independent, third-party verification of food practices in North America, introduced the CARE Certified program last year. CARE is a suite of sustainability standards that certifies participating farmers and ranchers are implementing exceptional practices in animal care, environmental stewardship and that they engage productively with their neighbors to help build a stronger community.

Where Food Comes From Inc.’s independent auditors have visited Heinen’s beef, pork and poultry farms and ranches and have observed their animals, reviewed their records and compared all the information collected to specific standards and claims they make about how Heinen’s meat is produced. “We source Heinen’s beef, pork and chicken from animals that are raised sustainably – not only because it results in a better product, but because it’s the right thing to do,” said Tom Heinen, Co-President of Heinen’s.

Although the meat industry has seen many changes since Joe Heinen first opened his butcher shop in 1929, Heinen’s continues to follow his philosophies of “buying the best to sell the best” and “knowing your sources.” This allows Heinen’s to provide their customers with high-quality proteins from animals who are guaranteed a high-quality life. “It goes without saying that we’ve continued to see the growth in Heinen’s as global leaders in the retail industry and we’re glad to partner with them on something that we’re both so passionate about,” said Leann Saunders, COO of Where Food Comes From, Inc.
