What is Where Food Comes From?

Check the labels of any products bought during your last grocery haul and you’re bound to see countless claims. On paper, these claims sound great, but how can we be sure that they’re accurate?

That’s the role of Where Food Comes From. Founded and operated by John and Leann Saunders, Where Food Comes From is an organization that helps farmers and ranchers identify and verify sustainable production practices and share these messages with people and grocers, like Heinen’s, who buy their product.

Where Food Comes From provides third party verification for Heinen’s branded beef, pork and Gerber’s chicken to ensure that we are sourcing the best so that you can enjoy the best.

By Heinen's Grocery Store
In 1929, Joe Heinen opened the doors of a small butcher shop on the east side of Cleveland, Ohio, aiming to establish himself as the city’s purveyor of quality meats. As customers came into Heinen’s new shop for their meat purchases, they began asking him to carry groceries as well. Joe added homemade peanut butter, pickles and donuts and by 1933, business had grown enough to include a line of produce and canned goods. Heinen’s Grocery Store was born.
