Smash burgers are really trendy right now, especially on restaurant menus, but they’re also easy to make at home, especially when you have a lineup of premium ingredients from Heinen’s! I love a smash burger on a traditional bun, but the thin patty got me thinking… could I turn this into a taco?

The answer is yes, you absolutely can! These Smash Burger Tacos are insanely delicious, easy enough to make on a weeknight for hungry kids and can even be elevated for adults with a homemade horseradish mayo.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • It Uses Quality Ground Beef. Heinen’s CARE Certified ground beef is my go-to for virtually any beef-based dish because it is guaranteed to be raised in alignment with the highest standards for quality and animal welfare. You will taste the difference.
  • It’s a Flavorful Fusion of Two Beloved Foods. You’ll love this because it’s two delicious food items “smashed” together to form the ultimate family dinner! The flavor is unreal thanks to a combination of smash burger seasoning and taco seasoning.
  • It’s Customizable. What’s a taco without toppings? When serving this dish, have a buffet of toppings available to allow everyone to build their perfect taco! My toppings of choice include a tangy horseradish mayo drizzle and a heading spoonful chopped pickle chips.
  • You Can Add Heinen’s Fresh Guacamole and Chips as a Side: A Mexican-inspired meal is not complete without a side of guac and chips! Heinen’s Fan Favorite guacamole is made fresh in-store using premium Hass avocados. Serve it with chips or use it a dip for the tacos!

For the Tacos

  • 6” flour tortillas
  • 3 lbs. Heinen’s Care Certified ground beef
  • 4 medium onions, sliced thin
  • 2 packets taco seasoning
  • 2 Tbsp. McCormick Grill Mates smash burger seasoning
  • Heinen's sliced pepper Jack cheese
  • Shredded lettuce
  • Sliced tomatoes
  • Chopped pickle chips

For the Horseradish Mayo

  • 2 Tbsp fresh horseradish
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 Tbsp. Heinen's ketchup
  • 2 Tbsp. Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp. hot sauce

For the Horseradish Mayo

  1. In a bowl, mix together all of the sauce ingredients. Keep sauce refrigerated until ready to use.

For the Tacos:

  1. Preheat a gas or charcoal grill for indirect cooking. Set a large cast iron skillet or grill top griddle on the hot side of the grill to heat up. Cover with the lid.
  2. Hand-mix the taco and smash burger seasoning with ground beef. Form each burger into a 2.5-inch ball and set on a tray.
  3. Add a drizzle of olive oil to the skillet. After a few minutes, arrange the sliced onions in the pan, using a handful for each patty. All of the burgers will likely not fit in the skillet at once, so work in batches.
  4. Set the beef balls on top of the onion piles and using a heavy grill press, smash each ball into a thin patty. If you do not have a grill press, you can also use a metal spatula.
  5. Cover the grill and cook until the onions and meat are crisp, about 5 minutes. Flip the patties and cook on the other side for 3 minutes.
  6. Scrape any residual onions to the side of the pan and discard. Repeat steps 3-5 for the remaining burgers.
  7. Warm the tortillas on the grill before making each taco, about 2 minutes per side. Add a cheese slice and cook for about 30 seconds more.
  8. Remove from the grill and make the tacos by placing a patty on the cheesy side of each tortilla. Top with shredded lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and horseradish mayo. Serve withand enjoy!
