For most people, supplements are critical for maintaining health in the body. They’re easy to consume and beneficial if they contain natural and healthy ingredients. Dr. Todd Pesek, Heinen’s Chief Medical Officer, understood this long ago and wanted to change the way people thought about plant-based diets and supplements. His understanding of vitamins and their relationship to the body led to the creation of Nutritional Roots in 2014. Since then, the company has become renowned for the care they give to their supplements, customers and environment.

Justin Root, the President of Nutritional Roots, listens to and incorporates Dr. Todd’s medical expertise when launching new supplements. He explained that they “decided to emphasize Dr. Todd’s lifelong personal history with plant-based nutrition.” One of the ways Nutritional Roots achieves this is by making sure their plants are grown in the best environments. This approach to caring about the source of a supplement’s ingredients means the company is willing to travel from Cleveland to Vermont to the Andes Mountain of Peru to seek them out. If great plants are there, so is Nutritional Roots.

Outside of body health, Nutritional Roots also cares about the health of the environment. This care has led Justin, Dr. Todd and their team to create products, packaging and messaging that are as green as possible. They’ve shifted to post-consumer recycled materials for their packaging labels and marketing materials and have taken an interest in being part of a circular economy – a school of thought where the outputs from one product become the inputs for the next. This approach to sustainability is in line with the company’s commitment to being as helpful to the environment as they are to consumers.

A benefit of buying supplements from a company with a foundation in medicine is that, whether someone is a beginner or an expert in nutrition, there are supplements designed to help them get the vitamins and nutrients they need. Nutritional Roots has products for everyone – from helping plant-based people fill common nutrient deficiencies with their Fermented Wholefood Multivitamin + B12 to helping healthy adults support their gut health with probiotics. The company’s vitamins run the gamut on benefits and because of this, appeal to people with a wide array of preferences and supplement experience.

Looking toward the future, Dr. Todd, Justin and Nutritional Roots have no plans of slowing down. They are currently developing a line of hemp products, which will support wellness with unique phytonutrients called cannabinoids. In addition, the team has introduced Plant-Based Educator Christine Frey. Heinen’s shoppers can find her at their local Heinen’s hosting Plant-Based Grocery Tours and How-To Hemp Workshops. You can sign up for the events at the Wellness Department. She is certified in plant-based nutrition and provides expert guidance to customers who are unsure of how to eat or what supplements will work for them. Justin also mentioned a continued interest in our partnership, stating, “I started working with Heinen’s in 2011 and it was love at first sight. Their business exudes a unique culture of care and consideration.”  We feel the same about Nutritional Roots and are proud to work with a company so committed to health and the environment.

By Heinen's Grocery Store
In 1929, Joe Heinen opened the doors of a small butcher shop on the east side of Cleveland, Ohio, aiming to establish himself as the city’s purveyor of quality meats. As customers came into Heinen’s new shop for their meat purchases, they began asking him to carry groceries as well. Joe added homemade peanut butter, pickles and donuts and by 1933, business had grown enough to include a line of produce and canned goods. Heinen’s Grocery Store was born.
