The Story Behind the Stems: Get to Know Heinen’s Cut Tulips

In the Midwest, spring doesn’t just arrive, it blooms! Few flowers announce spring’s arrival with as much hope as tulips. After months of gray skies, the first bursts of color always feel celebratory.

Ever wonder why Heinen’s tulips look fresher, stand taller, and last longer? The region really matters and so does the care that goes into each stem.

We Know Our Sources: Pioneer Flower Farms

Heinen’s partners with Pioneer Flower Farms, a second-generation Dutch family farm that immigrated from the Netherlands to Ontario in 1971.

Today, Pioneer produces nearly 70 million blooms each year and has grown to become the largest bulb-forcing farm in North America.

Located in St. Catharines, Ontario, just across Lake Erie, Pioneer’s tulips are grown in nutrient-rich soil and carefully harvested at peak freshness. Because of this close proximity, our tulips are delivered to Heinen’s stores the very next day, with only about four hours of transit time.

That makes a remarkable difference.

While many retailers rely on Dutch-grown tulips shipped overseas by container — which can take a week or more before they ever reach shelves, our partnership means less stress on the flowers, stronger stems, and longer-lasting blooms in your home.

Notice the Difference:

  • Greener foliage
  • Heavier, stronger stems
  • Longer vase life

How to Care for Tulips:

  • Before placing tulips in water, cut stems at an angle.
  • Retrim stems every 2-3 days to help them absorb water efficiently.
  • Keep the water fresh and cold. Change it daily or every other day.
  • Remove any leaves that are submerged below the waterline.
  • Use a taller vase to support natural movement. As tulips continue to grow, they will bend toward light.
  • Store tulips in a cool location away from direct sunlight.

Heinen's Grocery Store

By Heinen's Grocery Store

In 1929, Joe Heinen opened the doors of a small butcher shop on the east side of Cleveland, Ohio, aiming to establish himself as the city’s purveyor of quality meats. As customers came into Heinen’s new shop for their meat purchases, they began asking him to carry groceries as well. Joe added homemade peanut butter, pickles and donuts and by 1933, business had grown enough to include a line of produce and canned goods. Heinen’s Grocery Store was born.
