There’s much to love about matcha, which is likely why you’ve seen it featured on the menus of coffeehouses everywhere!

Matcha is simply green tea leaves that are ground into a super fine powder. If you like green tea, consider matcha its whole leaf form rather than its steeped counterpart. This powder can be used in all kinds of recipes including smoothies, baked goods and, of course, the ever popular iced latte!

The vibrant green color is certainly Instagram-worthy, but matcha is also high in antioxidants and has been shown to boost metabolism, all of which make the everyday latte experience that much better.

Those that have tried matcha know that it has a very unique, earthy taste. It honestly took me a while to warm up to it, but I’ve found that adding a flavorful companion, like strawberry milk, helps significantly. Not only does it add a beautiful contrasting color, but it contributes subtle fruity sweetness to each sip.

Ingredients

For the Strawberry Milk

  • 3 strawberries
  • 1/4 cup dairy free creamer (can sub for canned coconut milk)
  • 1 Tbsp. honey or maple syrup or 2-3 drops liquid stevia (optional)
  • 1 scoop vanilla collagen or protein powder (optional)

For the Matcha

  • 1 tsp. matcha powder
  • 1 Tbsp. hot water
  • 1/2 cup nut milk of choice

Instructions

  1. Blend the strawberries, creamer or coconut milk, sweetener of choice (optional) and collagen or protein powder (optional) in a high-powered blender until smooth. Set aside.
  2. Heat the water in the microwave for 45 seconds.
  3. Add the matcha powder to a bowl with the hot water and whisk until no clumps remain.
  4. Pour the milk of choice into a glass with ice.
  5. Top with matcha and stir until combined.
  6. Pour in the strawberry milk.
  7. Mix, add extra sweetener or milk if needed and enjoy!

Note: To make a classic iced matcha latte without the strawberry milk, simply add an additional 1/2 cup of nut milk to the matcha recipe and add sweetener to the milk prior to pouring in the matcha. Be sure to mix well!

In 1929, Joe Heinen opened the doors of a small butcher shop on the east side of Cleveland, Ohio, aiming to establish himself as the city’s purveyor of quality meats. As customers came into Heinen’s new shop for their meat purchases, they began asking him to carry groceries as well. Joe added homemade peanut butter, pickles and donuts and by 1933, business had grown enough to include a line of produce and canned goods. Heinen’s Grocery Store was born.
