Crispy golden fries, rich brown gravy, and creamy cheese curds — few dishes capture pure comfort quite like Classic Poutine!

Born in Québec in the 1950s, this simple yet irresistible creation has become a Canadian icon and a global guilty pleasure! But you don’t have to visit Canada to enjoy an authentic plateful of this stick-to-your-ribs style comfort food. In fact, you can find everything you need to make it at your local Heinen’s.

Our version keeps things simple with Heinen’s straight cut frozen French fries, baked until golden and crispy and smothered in a rich, homemade gravy made with Heinen’s beef stock and Heinen’s unsalted butter. Arguably, the best part of this dish is the Charlevoix cheese curds from Heinen’s Specialty Cheese Department, which are available in cheddar, roasted garlic, and buffalo ranch varieties. Try the cheddar curds for a classic take, the roasted garlic curds for an extra savory twist, or the buffalo ranch curds for a little heat and tang.

If you’re looking for a shortcut, use Heinen’s beef gravy, conveniently located in the Deli, for the same comforting flavor in less time. However you make it, this poutine is hearty, cozy, and guaranteed to satisfy any comfort food craving.

  • 2 Tbsp. all-purpose flour
  • 4 cups Heinen’s beef stock
  • 2 Tbsp. Heinen’s ketchup
  • 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp. Heinen’s garlic powder
  • ½ tsp. Heinen’s onion powder
  • ¼ tsp. salt
  • ¼ tsp. black pepper

For the Poutine

  • 1 package Charlevoix cheese curds
  • 1 package Heinen’s straight cut frozen French fries

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F. Bake one package of Heinen’s straight cut frozen French fries according to package directions until golden and crispy.
  2. In a large saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1–2 minutes, until smooth and lightly golden.
  3. Slowly whisk in the beef stock followed by the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Continue whisking until it’s smooth.
  4. Simmer the mixture for 8-10 minutes, stirring often, until thickened and glossy. For a shortcut, warm one container of Heinen’s beef gravy from the Deli instead.
  5. Arrange the hot fries on a large plate or platter. Top with one package of Charlevoix cheese curds, then pour the warm gravy over top. Serve immediately and enjoy!
