Set your seasonal candles aside! There’s a new way to fill your home with the scents of the holiday season and it’s easy to do and significantly cheaper.
Winter and holiday potpourri can be found on the shelves of nearly every home furnishing store at this time of year, and while they certainly smell amazing, they can easily be made at home using a handful of ingredients from your local Heinen’s.
In it’s most basic form, potpourri is a strong-scented mixture of dried fruits, herbs and spices that are often packaged into bags to place throughout one’s home, or used as scented décor in serving dishes and vases.
The great thing about this homemade potpourri is that you don’t even need a dehydrator. All it takes is an oven and little patience as the ingredients bake and dehydrate.
Packaged into mason jars to keep on-hand for holiday entertaining or to gift to others, this Homemade Holiday Potpourri is a must-make this winter
- Total time:
- 3 Blood oranges
- 1 Orange
- 1 Lemon
- 1 Pear
- 1 Apple
- A handful of pomegranate seeds
- Sage leaves
- A handful of Heinen's cinnamon sticks
- Crystalized ginger
- 5 star anise
- A handful of Heinen's tri-colored peppercorns
- Preheat the oven to 175°F.
- Slice all of the fruit.
- Place all of the ingredients, except for the cinnamon sticks, ginger and peppercorns on a baking sheet.
- Bake low and slow for 7 hours to dehydrate.
- After 7 hours, remove the baking sheet from the oven and allow the contents to rest of one hour.
- Divide all of the items on the baking sheet, as well as the cinnamon sticks, ginger and peppercorns between several lidded mason jars. Add the cinnamon sticks first and be sure that the blood orange slices face the outside of the jar for a pop of color.
- When ready to use, add the potpourri to fabric bags to hang throughout your home, to large serving bowls for festive décor or gift to others.
